CRANSTON PRINT WORKS RECOGNIZED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

On August 23, 2002, the Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance for Toxics Use Reduction (OTA) presented a “Certificate of Partnership” to Cranston Print Works, who has successfully eliminated the annual use of 2.66 million pounds of sulfuric acid.  This was in recognition for both their early leadership in the TUR program by setting high standards of performance and their willingness to talk publicly about their success in reducing their use of toxic materials.

Paul Richard, director of OTA, presented the certificate to Mr. Andrew Sylvia, President of Cranston Consumer Products, Mr. George Shuster, President and CEO of Cranston Print Works, and Mr. Henry Donaldson, Manager of Environmental Engineering.  Also in attendance were Senator Richard Moore, Webster Selectman Robert Stawiecki, Jack Healy, Director of the Mass. Extension Partnership, Paul Martin, Project Manager of the Mass. Extension Partnership, Tim Loftus, Pre-treatment Coordinator of Webster-Dudley Wastewater Treatment Plant, and Matt Jennette, aide to Rep. Paul Kujawski. 

Cranston Print Works is an environment leader in its industry, winning the 1993 Toxic Use Reduction Environmental Award given by the Worcester Business Journal in conjunction with the Massachusetts Audubon Society for reducing the use of toxic chemicals by over 80% since 1991.  In 1996, CPW was selected to participate in the states’ first Cleaner Technology Demonstration Sites Program run by Massachusetts Toxic Use Reduction Institute as a result of exemplary reductions in the use of toxic chemicals.  In 1997, the Massachusetts Electric Company presented an award for Cranston’s commitment to energy efficiency.  This most recent recognition acknowledges Cranston’s continued success story that has been instrumental in helping inspire businesses throughout the state and nationally. 

Cranston Print Works, originally founded in 1824, is the oldest textile printing company in the U.S.  Cranston Consumer Products is the textile division of CPW and supplies fabric for the home sewing industry, manufacturers of home furnishings, and apparel manufacturers.  Marketing and Sales are based in New York City.  Design Studios are located in New York City and Cranston, Rhode Island.  Worldwide customer service, the printing and finishing manufacturing operation, a distribution center and supply chain management organization are all located in Webster, Massachusetts.  Cranston Textile Services, located in Cranston, Rhode Island, provides sampling and packaging services for a wide variety of products from textiles to novelty items as well as distribution of seconds and remnants.  Universal Engravers, located in Cranston, Rhode Island, engraves screens from artwork that translate the beautiful designs onto fabric.  To find out more about Cranston Print Works, visit their website at www.cranstonvillage.com.
